I think if something is done with passion, it shines through. At least the effort will, if not anything else! The problem occurs when it doesn't even come out. And by coming out, I mean it should come out to a person, who is detatched with your feelings/work. You 'say' you are passionate, but your 'work' doesn't. So, didn't that passion go down the drain? What good is that passion which doesn't translate to quality?

P.S: I think it is high time we stop abusing the word.

Fair point - when you are learning, of course you can't be exceptional all the time.

However, I think it is very important to realize you are learning and to evaluate your work critically instead of deluding yourself that it is "fine". I don't mean this evaluation has to be public - it can be completely internal (for example, even though I put my first film online, I am very aware of the many, many areas for improvement). That's the only way to keep learning and to improve.

Just FYI, as background, my post was written with a very specific example in mind.

This is an interesting debate. But, I don't have a clear cut idea what or how I feel about it.

I sometimes post my scribblings on my blog as poems & get encouraging comments mostly from friends or people who know me. I'd have never attempted poetry after the initial burst in late teen, if not for blogs. Nowadays, I'm always thinking about what to post next & also trying improve the quality of my output by reading better poets.

It is a question of whether you have it in you, like it is in any other field. Otherwise, above average bloggers wouldn't be getting offers to write books or to join mainstream media as columnists or full-time journalists.

Yes, a false dichotomy. But such was the debate - which should say something about it.

The comment thingy should be straight-forward. Let me know if there are issues.

IMHO, this is a bit of a false dichotomy--quality and passion aren't competing values. But citing passion as an excuse for poor quality--that's a big NO for me. So I guess I'm agreeing with you :)

I need to figure out your new comment-posting-thingy.
